LITTLE ROCK - Former U.S. Attorney and candidate for the U.S. Senate Conner Eldridge today gave his thoughts following Congress' decision to break for a seven-week recess despite many critical pieces of legislation still pending. The seven-week-long recess marks the longest in recent governmental history.
"Does anyone think that things are in such great shape that our elected officials have earned a seven-week vacation?" demanded Eldridge. "Representatives, like my opponent, have failed this country by leaving a whole host of issues at a stalemate while they return to the comfort of their homes. The fundamental truth is that so many people are depending on Congress, and their decision to leave unfinished business of crucial importance has real consequences for hardworking folks who don't get seven-week vacations."
Congress' record-long recess leaves behind must-do legislation items such as combatting the Zika virus, which health officials warn could become a public health crisis if left unaddressed. Other issues left unresolved include addressing federal budget issues, many judicial vacancies, a criminal justice reform package and giving any type of response to the nation's recent gun violence.
"The worst part is that nobody is surprised by this. It's as if we've come to expect our elected officials to throw us under the bus. We deserve better. And we can do better. As the next U.S. Senator from Arkansas I will work diligently and vigorously to address all issues in a timely manner, and make sure there is no business left unfinished."
