MOUNTAIN HOME - Former U.S. Attorney and candidate for the U.S. Senate, Conner Eldridge today visited Serenity Inc., a domestic violence shelter in Mountain Home that provides assistance and advocacy for women and children in dangerous domestic situations. While there, Eldridge toured the facility and highlighted his work as U.S. Attorney, where he prosecuted domestic violence cases. He also talked about his support for the Violence Against Women Act, noting his opponent, Sen. Boozman's opposition to the bill that provides protection and assistance programs to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
"As a prosecutor, I saw horrible domestic dispute cases involving women and young children, so this is an issue I am particularly passionate about," said Eldridge. "I realize the importance of the work done by shelters just like Serenity Inc. and the lives they are able to change. I am especially grateful for the workers here in Mountain Home who clearly care so much about helping those in these abusive situations."
During the tour, Eldridge promised to be a strong advocate for women in the U.S. Senate -- emphasizing his support for the Violence Against Women Act, Equal Pay, and Paid Family Leave. He also noted his opponent, Sen. Boozman visited the same shelter during a Senate recess in August of this year, despite voting multiple times against funding of domestic violence shelters.
"This is an issue that should not be partisan, should not be political," said Eldridge. "It's as simple as standing up for what is right. I am a supporter of the Violence Against Women Act for this reason; my opponent voted against the bill. I have a real problem with that. I also have a problem with him showing up here during an election year to score political points after voting against a bill in the Senate to provide funding for domestic violence shelters. We must demand more. As a U.S. Senator, I will fight vigorously to stand up for what's right for all Arkansans - especially those most vulnerable among us."
